Fearless Vampire Killers, The Hub, Plymouth, 6/5/15

After a busy few months, Fearless Vampire Killers have set out once again on their Unbreakable Hearts tour. We caught all the action at the Hub in Plymouth.

This was our first time witnessing Embers of Eden and what a treat it was. The vocals produced by Alex Dumbiotis made a perfect combination that fully complimented her powerful, strong voice and personality. They held great stage presence and what can we say about Oli White? He has some insane shredding skills due to his flawless guitar techniques. All in all, Embers of Eden’s overall performance was incredible and we were blown away; they are definitely ones to watch.

Up next was Myth City whose sound hinted a bit of Rage Against The Machine. They impressed the audience with their stage presence and high energy that created a good vibe, however, the overall performance didn’t really grab out attention because honestly, we got bored halfway through as it became too predictable. Also, the screaming element was more like screeching as it pierced our ears, which made us want to leave.

German five piece Annisokay bounded on to the stage and gave us a big slap in the face with the great vocal combinations between Dave Grunewald and Christoph Wieczorak. They too had fantastic stage presence so interactions with the crowd were easier. There was a great musical balance and structure in their set, which was shown through Day To Day Tragedy, as everything gelled together. They were amazing and we need to see them again.

Cheers roared throughout the venue as the Fearless Vampire Killers unleashed their talents on the excited crowd. As Neon in the Dance Halls, All Hallows Evil and oldie Fetish for the Finite rang through the building, the energy levels from everyone increased while each song past. Laurence Beveridge and Kier Kemp heavily interacted with the audience who sung back every lyric with such passion and enthusiasm; it was intoxicating. Kier and Luke Illingworth performed Brave the Night that exposed all sorts of emotion and was heart warming as it felt as if we were supporting each other.

Fearless Vampire Killers’ hour on stage finally came to an end, however, they soon were summoned back by echoing chants of “FVK!” Their response was by performing one last song; At War with the Thirst, that was sucked in tight by all their fans. It was a brilliant performance overall with exquisite talent and flawlessness. We are extremely pleased this band is doing so well and of course we got to see them so locally.

Live Review:The Afterparty, 8/3/2015 @ Tiki Bar and Grill, Plymouth

We were day three into The Afterparty tour at a very intimate location that is Tiki Bar in Plymouth. With main support from Beyond Recall and locals; Last One Out and Your Last Day, Canon Media managed to get last minute access inside.

To open up the show, Devon band; Your Last Day, headed to the floor to show us what they had to offer. With their rougher vocal element and combined pitch levels they reminded us a little of A Day To Remember and Four Year Strong. It was the drummer’s final show with Your Last Day but that didn’t stop him giving everything he has resulting to the removal of his glasses. With their good basslines, fantastic riffs and strong vocals, everything went together like a jigsaw puzzle. Your Last Day is a band not to be missed and they are lovely guys too, which is always a bonus.

Up next was Plymouth’s own Last One Out who recently appointed Sam Cudmore to lead vocals who seemed to take the role quite well. We have seen him in a previous band; Forever Scarlet, and it’s safe to say his vocals have improved a lot. With an EP already under their belts, this band performed nearly all new material as well as performing 10 Years Too Late for their finale and we could tell their hearts and souls were in that performance as everything was executed brilliantly giving it a musical balance of fantastic sounds and energy.

From the word go, Zaid (vocalist) was off into the crowd, bounding from either ends of the titchy room spreading his liveliness around, however, it only reached one half of the audience because the room was split into fans and general gig goers. Due to this, hardly anyone got involved until Beyond Recall covered Low by Flo Rida and T-Pain where everyone started moving and grooving. The drumming style was a lot more relaxed unlike the two previous bands and the strobe lighting was a good touch, however, may have been a little too much in this size of venue. Beyond Recall had a continuously high amount of energy throughout and they sounded okay but we weren’t worn over by their set.

The Afterparty kicked off with thumping bass and great guitar work; however, at points the reverb on the lead microphone altered the vocalist’s voice to sound a little whiney, which was off putting for us. Putting that aside, they covered Echo Smith’s hit Cool Kids and it got a decent response for one of the very first times playing it. The Afterparty completed their set with Liar Liar, which took this tiny venue by storm as the majority of the crowd were singing back. Their set was spot on musically for these lovely chaps but showcase wise – not so much; we put this down to venue size.
We can honestly say that the best part of the night was surprisingly the first two bands; Last One Out and Your Last Day, because their sound was fantastic as well as the passion they have for music. Both of these bands had the right amount of self-confidence of not over doing it, which can make a show go from hero to zero.
